From the Conciergerie to the Grand Palais, from the Grand Palais to the Grand Palais Éphémère

In June 1984, the Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne (SLAM), on the initiative of its President Jeanne Laffitte, organised the first International Antiquarian Book Fair in Paris, at the Conciergerie. In this historic location, the success was considerable, and every two years, booksellers from around the world began to make Paris a regular destination to exhibit a wide range of precious works.

In 1993, the Fair moved to the Maison de la Mutualité and in 1995 it became an annual event. Since April 2007, the glass-domed Grand Palais has been host to the Antiquarian Book Fair in conjunction with the Original Print Fair. This event is one of the most prestigious fairs of its kind in the world with over on hundred and fifty national and international exhibitors, all of whom are members of the International League of Antiquarian booksellers, as well as fifty fine print dealers.

The International Antiquarian Book Fair becomes in 2015 The International Rare Book & Autograph Fair, to reflect its evolution over the years. The Fair has in 2016 one denomination : International Rare Book, Autograph, Print & Drawing Fair.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019, the Rare Book Fair was organised at the same time with the Fine Art Fair.

In 2020, only the International Rare book Fair took place in Septembre.

In 2021,  the Fair will join the Grand Palais Éphémère, on the Champ-de-Mars, and will bring together from 24 to 26 September the two sections of the Fair, Rare Books & Prints and the Fine Art Fair. Between the École Militaire and the Eiffel Tower, the Temporary Grand Palais will feature the same curved lines as the Nave of the Grand Palais.

This structure of 10,000 square meters designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and organized by GL Events, will accommodate prestigious cultural events while the Grand Palais itself is undergoing renovation work. This structure is currently being installed on the Champ-de-Mars where it will open early in 2021. Events will be held there until the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.

This exceptional cultural event is a unique opportunity to become acquainted with the treasures of written heritage presented by leading professionals. Visitors can meander along the traces of journeys taken by countless human minds over the course of centuries. From manuscripts to avant-garde, from a letter by François I to the drafts of Marcel Proust, from a XIIIth century psalm book to a futurist manifesto, amateurs will be able to browse the shelves of an immense bookshop, with thousands of stunningly diverse documents.

Fine art objects from all specialities and fields are presented under the prism of expertise with the support and collaboration of four Experts Companies: CNE, CNES, FNEPSA and CEA.  Works of art unveiled and revealed by the competence, know-how, scholarly and historical research of the experts.
